A pleasant climate, time-honored history, attractive natural scenery and historical sites, gives Chengde its reputation as one of the most famous tourist cities in China. It is an ideal place for sightseeing and escape from the heat in other parts of China during summer months.
Not only is the Chengde Mountain Resort the largest existing imperial garden in the world, it was also the summer palace for emperors in the Qing dynasty who came to the Mountain Resort to escape the squelching heat in Beijing. And was it fit for emperors – a vast complex of palaces and administrative and ceremonial buildings nestled into a landscape of lakes, pastureland and forests it took 89 years to complete between 1703 and 1792. The Mountain Resort is most famous for the 72 scenic spots which were named by the Kangxi and Qianlong Emperors. In addition to its aesthetic appeal, the Mountain Resort is a rare historic vestige of the final development of feudal society in China.
Eight Outer Temples
To the northeast of the Mountain Resort, lies the Eight Outer Temples, the emperor’s summer residence during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). “Eight Outer Temples” is a collective name given to 12 temples located outside Gubeikou – a section of the Great Wall. Alongside the Mountain Resort, the temples have been named a UNESCO World Heritage site. The temples were built in succession and six are now open to tourists, namely Putuo Zongchengzhi Temple, Puning Temple, Xumi Fushouzhi Temple, Pule Temple, Anyuan Temple, and Puyou Temple. Each one has its own distinct features and special appeal.
Two-Pagoda Mountain Scenic Zone
Located in Shuangtashan Town, a short distance from Chengde, this scenic zone covers an area of karst landforms, including two peaks in the shape of pagodas, hence its name.
Qingchui Cliff National Park
A park that features a dramatic, lofty and steep formation called the Danxia Landform. Its highlight is the Qingchui Cliff, which is nearly 197 feet high and looks like a giant wooden club at the top. More than 100 species of wild flowers, including rhododendron, peony, rose, lilac, cherry, and pinks, can be found all over this area creating an intoxicating ambiance of scent and color.
