In ancient times, Dunhuang was an important city on the Silk Road. At that time, transportation in Dunhuang was of great importance since it connected China with the west in both business and culture. Today, the value of business has diminished along with that of the Silk Road. However, as a popular tourism city famous for its abundant relics, transportation in Dunhuang is still important to those who are eager to experience its magnificent sights.

The Dunhuang Airport (DNH) operates a series of scheduled flights to Beijing, Shanghai, Xian, Lanzhou and Urumqi.

By rail, the Dunhuang railway station is the second largest railway in Gansu province, and there are trains from Dunhuang to Jiuquan, Lanzhou, Xiían,†and Urumqi.

It is very convenient and easy for visitors to take taxis around Dunhuang to sights of interests fares are reasonably priced and are negotiable.

Rickshaws ply the streets of Dunhuang and are an interesting part of transportation. Such passenger carts are able to bypass road traffic and make for a unique, flexible, and convenient trip.
