Urumqi, meaning beautiful pasture, is the capital of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Located in the hinterland of the Eurasian continent, the city is on the northern slope of the Tianshan Mountains and at the southern edge of Jungar Basin. It covers a total area of 14,217 sq km and has a population of more than 2 million people.
Key tourist attractions include the world-renowned Dabancheng Town, the Erdao Bridge, No. 1 Glacier which is known as the living glacier fossil, the picturesque South Hill Pasture, the Chrysanthemum Terrace, the White Poplar Valley and the Shuimo Gully Scenic Area. Urumqi was an important hub on the ancient Silk Road.
