Carpets and Rugs in Xinjiang are famous for their vivid colors, exquisite craftsmanship and artistic design which reflect national and regional designs. Generally made of wool, they are manually woven by the Uygur people.
Atlas Silk is a type of silk fabric with fine intricate patterns and brilliant colors that are popular amongst Uygur women. Locals use the fabric for clothing and interior decoration.
Handicrafts include Uygur-style hats, knitted sweaters, ethnic costumes, hand-made embroideries, jade carvings and carpets which make popular souvenirs.
The International Grand Bazaar in Er Dao Qiao is a great place to shop for souvenirs and gifts. A grand complex with Muslim influences, it consists of a banquet hall, sightseeing tower, open-air stage, a mosque, and occupies 100,000 square meters. Local goods, ethnic foods, as well as goods from other parts of Asia are sold here. Other notable shopping areas are Century Ginwa Shopping Center, Parkson Shopping Center, Tianshan Department Building, Friendly Emporium, and Urumqi Shopping Center.
