Transportation

In ancient times, at the beginning of the Silk Road, Xi’an was one of the transport junctions in China. Fast forward to present day,  Xian is still a significant junction connecting central, north, and east China to northwest China and even other countries in west Asia via aviation highways, and railways.

Xian’s airport is located 50 km (about 31 miles) northwest of downtown in Xianyang, a neighboring city. Ranked the fourth busiest airport in China, Xianyang International Airport (XIY) operates domestic daily flights to and from almost every major Chinese destination. International flights to Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, among others also occur daily. From Xi’an, passengers can travel to other destinations such as Germany, France, Britain, America and Canada via transfers in Beijing.

There are two passenger railway stations in the city: Xi’an Railway Station and North Railway Station with train service to most major cities in China like Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing, Chengdu, Guangzhou, etc.
Long-distance bus travel to many major cities in China happens daily and is also a convenient way to travel because Xi’an is where nine national freeways and six national highways interconnect.
Additionally, Xian has 10 special tourist bus lines that provide convenient travel to popular tourist attractions, including the Bell Tower, the Shaanxi History Museum and the Big Wild Goose Pagoda. These buses are easily identifiable by their numbers marked with the character ‘?’ (You) meaning ‘Tourist’.

The city’s subway system is also an efficient way to travel. With 15 lines it covers both urban and suburban areas and cities like Xianyang, Lintong and Huxian County. For cyclists, some youth hostels and hotels in Xian rent bikes to their guests by the day or by the hour.
