Qinghai Lake and Bird Island
About 151 km from Xining, Qinghai Lake is a picturesque setting especially during August and September of each year when flowers wave in the wind, horses, cows, and sheep graze on the grassland, and snow-capped mountains in the distance stand high against the blue sky. The Bird Island is located on the northwestern corner of the lake.
Every April about 10,000 migratory birds of a dozen species fly to the area to nest, including bareheaded wild goose and brown-headed gulls, turning the island into the “Kingdom of Birds” and attracting lots of tourists.
Sun and Moon Mountain
About 40 kilometers (25 miles) from southwest of Huangyuan County in Xining sits the Sun and Moon Mountain (also as Riyue Mountain). The mountain demarcates the eastern agricultural area and the western pastoral area of Qinghai Province. From the top of the mountain is a flourishing of both prairie and farmland. It is 3,520 meters (11,549 feet) above sea level and is believed to be the only road to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. For many years, the mountain area had been an important thoroughfare to western China and a crucial link between the Han and Tibetan people.
